Consequences of disregarding Ghadir

The tens of thousands of Hadithes, regarding the Reappearance of Imam Mahdi (May Allah hasten his Emergence) and his characteristics, narrated from the Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) and other infallible ones (PBUT) existing in Shi'ah sources, can easily lead us to the conclusion that such number of Traditions have not been narrated in regards with any other infallible one, barring the Amir-Ol-Mo'menin Ali (PBUH). Therefore, rarely one can find any book of Hadith not containing the mention of Hazrat Mahdi (PBUH). This abundance itself underlines the importance and vitality of the issue. The Glad Tidings concerning the Reappearance of Hazrat Mahdi (PBUH) are so definite that prior to his birth, companions of the seventh and eighth Imams (PBUT) have written books about his Occultation and Reappearance. Thousands of books have been written in this subject throughout the years.

This vital issue which the continuation and Triumph of Divine Sovereignty depends upon, is not only narrated by the Shi'ah; the Mosnad of Ahmad-Ebne-Hanbal (exp. 241 A.H.) as the oldest book of Hadithes of the Sunni, contains approximately one hundred Traditions regarding Imam Mahdi (PBUH). Moreover, Sonan of Abi Dawood (275 A.H.), Sonan of Ebn Maajah (273 A.H.) and Sonan of Termadhi (297 A.H.) -which are the three of the major six Hadith books (Sehaah settah) highly respected by the Sunni- have each devoted one chapter to Hazrat Mahdi (PBUH). Besides, Sunni scholars have written more than one hundred books especially on this subject.

The Sunnis have gone to the extent of narrating the following tradition from the Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP):

One who denies the Mahdi, then he has indeed Disbelieved (Faqad Kafara).”

(Al-Borhaan fi-alaamaate-Mahdi Aakhere-Zzamaan by Allaamah Mottaqi Hendi, p. 170, Tr. 2)

They have also narrated the following tradition from Allah’s Messenger (PBUH&HP):

If there remains only one day for the end of this world, Allah will prolong that day till He does raise a person from my progeny whose name will be my name and whose Koniyah (the given name starting with either Om or Ab) will be my Koniyah. He will fill the earth with justice and equity as it would be fraught with injustice and tyranny.”

(Sonan Abi Dawood, Ketaab Al-Mahdi, Tr. 2482; Sonan Termadhi, Baab-o-Ma Jaa'a fel Mahdi, Tr. 2231.)

Therefore, the issue of Mahdawiyat is not invented by the Shi'ah, rather it is a genuine and vital belief, and a Promise by Allah and the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH&HP), and actually a Promise by all Prophets (PBUT); but what are the differences of the Shi'ah and Sunni regarding this Promise which defines the future of humankind, and where do the differences stem from, and …?
